I have been taking my wife and Kai to the pick-your-own strawberry farm in Wisconsin for about 9 or 10 years now. But the tradition had its origins long before that.
When I was 12, the same age that Kai is now, my parents took my sister and I to the very same farm in Wisconsin. Here's photo of me picking strawberries, with my dad and sister in the background.
It looks like we picked a lot of berries that day. The following photo shows me with my mom, grandmother, aunt, and sister.
The thing that strikes me the most about the above photo was that it looks like it was a very cool day based on how we were dressed. In all the times I've gone with Kai, it has almost always been scorching hot.
And today was to be no different - a 90 degree day was forecasted - so we decided to go early in the morning to beat the heat.
The berries were small but boy were they sweet! This year might be among the best in terms of the tastiness of the fruit.
A good time was had by all!
Aw..I loved seeing the pictures of you from years ago! How fun that you're still visiting the same farm! Seems like the smaller ones are always sweeter...yum!
ReplyDeleteThe berries were small and of all sorts of odd shapes; you'd never see these berries sold in a modern grocery store. But they tasted so much better than the perfect looking ones at the supermarket.
DeleteYes, it's amazing that the farm is still around after all these years!
Yuji...did I detect a little Mr. McCool in you behind those shades? :)
ReplyDeleteI think it is so nice to be able to go back to childhood places with your children...and to have things essentially be the same as they were then.
Freshly picked berries. I know Kai has been enjoying them.
Don't forget to pick cherries if you get a chance. My mother use to freeze them in large plastic bags filled with sugar. The frozen treats lasted all summer.
Haha, nothing cool about me, even with the shades. :)
DeleteWe've been having the fresh berries all week, and this weekend will make our homemade strawberry ice cream.
I've never gone cherry picking before but we're planning to go to the National Cherry Festival over the 4th of July weekend and may try to go to a pick-your-own orchard while we are there. Sounds delicious!
