The 3 AM Yoga Mat Incident

“I had it good.

“My son was sleeping through the night on a regular basis. That meant that I was getting a full night’s sleep every night for the first time since I became a dad. It felt wonderful to wake up feeling refreshed every morning.

"And then we changed Kai’s medication. He has not slept through the night since…”

This week’s column in the Patch describes the strange things that can happen in the middle of the night when your son cannot sleep.

  1. OH my. We used to have many sleepless nights when our boys were younger. They rarely bothered us, though. They were content to roam the house, raid the refrigerator (leaving the door open) turning on the water (leaving it running) and turning on all the lights in the house. Spencer used to run away, which was always a frightening thing. Melatonin was a lifesaver for us...and we found a dual release tablet that lasts the whole night.

Having said all of that. Kai certainly is a bright boy, isn't he? Just remembering that mask and knowing he needed it. My husband and I have to be a team to figure things out, too. Sometimes it doesn't click with one and the other will know.

I hope sleeping through the night returns to your home. I've always said you can deal with anything during the day if you have slept through the night. :)

    1. Betsy, I am kind of glad that Kai wakes me up. I don't think I'd want him roaming the house on his own like that. (Our doors also lock from the inside so he wouldn't be able to get out without a key, though).

The dual release melatonin sounds wonderful. I need to look into that.

Yes, getting a good night's sleep makes a big difference, but I have adjusted (somewhat) to a lack of sleep.

  2. We get it from Swanson Health Products...order online. It's a great company and we get all of our supplements from there. It's one of the best things we've ever bought. Product #SWU114. Give about 30 minutes before bedtime.
I hope it works for Kai.

I also have to say that I'm really enjoying getting to know you a little through our blogs. You inspire me to be a better parent. Thanks, Yuji. :)

    1. Thanks for the info! It is certainly worth trying!

Thank you for the very kind words, Betsy! My writing helps me to reflect, and in that way helps me a better parent myself. But to hear you say that is very generous as I know how hard you have been working to be a GREAT MOM for all these years.

  3. I, too, was going to suggest Melatonin. I have been using it for years. The timed release is probably a good option. I hope it works for Kai.

    1. Shiroi, we had tried melatonin a few years ago and it did not seem to make a difference. But, recently, we decided to give it another try and it seems to help Kai fall asleep quickly. He just does not stay asleep. I did not know there was a timed-release version, so we are looking forward to trying it.
